Thattekad has always been on the list of places to visit for any serious birding
enthusiast. We love hosting them at River House and go the extra mile by setting them up
for a day with a bird expert. If you have birds you want to cross off your list, this is
the perfect way to do it. The Sanctuary is a lovely place for casual visitors as well -
the profusion of exotic birds, butterflies and dragonflies everywhere you turn make it a
visual experience you’re unlikely to forget. You’re also likely to spot Elephant and
Barking Deer, and if you’re lucky the elusive Loris, Travancore Flying Squirrel or the
Painted Bat.
Thattekad is open to visitors all year round, but the best time to visit between October
and March. If you’d like an added treat, migratory birds from the north visit Thattekad
between November and January.
Thattekkad region boasts of 728 species of plants, 284 species of birds, 222 species of
butterflies, 52 species of fishes, 39 species of mammals, 36 species of reptiles, 17
species of amphibians are recorded from the Sanctuary.
Common birds are Indian roller, Cuckoo, common snipe, crow phesant, grey drongo, Malabar
trogon, wood peckers, lare pied wagtail, Indian hill myna etc.
Special Birds found here are Ceylon Frogmouth, Bourdillon’s Long eared Indian Nightjar,
Peninsular Bay owl, Crimson throated barbet,Malabar hornbill, Malabar Shama, Grey-headed
fising eagle, Indian Pitta, Yellow browed Bulbul.
